X-country single track

Wales is arguably one of the best places for Xcountry single track biking in Europe and the World. With a good selection of green, blue, red and black routes in north and mid Wales alone there is enough to keep the most avid mountain biker happy for a while. The area is attracting riders from further and further afield and together with other adventure activities on offer in the area it is the place to come for an adrenilin packed holiday. Unlike some of the other adventure activities on offer in north Wales, xcountry mountain biking does involve skill, fitness and and certain degree of risk of injury so before you embark on a xcountry biking experience make sure you are ready for it! If you are new to it why not try and guided ride to start?

The main single track trails in the immediate area are:

Gwydir Mawr and Bach - Red routes  

Gwydir Mawr is 25 km in length and combines some great single track with sections of forest fire trail. There are big climbs and big descents, and amazing secenery. A real trail to remember and to be taken seriously.  The trails can be accessed from several points around Betws Y Coed. Gwydir Bach (8.7km) is a shorter version of the main route. The route is done in an anti clockwise direction and is very well signposted . 

Penmachno  _ Red Route 

The Penmachno trails have been developed and maintained by local MTB volunteer enthusiasts.  The trails consist of 2 linking loops Dolen Machno (19km) and Dolen Eryri (11km) and can be accesed fro the Panmachno area, some 3 miles from Betws Y Coed.  (drop off  and pick can be provided by arrangement) . This is a remote ride with a natural feeling and glorious scenery.  There is little or no phone signal in this remote valley, please be well equipped and let us know if you are riding there.

Antur Stiniog 

This down hill bike centre is around 15 miles away in Blaenau Ffestioniog  . There are red and black descent routes and an uplift service is provided. Please note that bikes hired from Beics Betws are not suitable for use at Antur Stiniog.

Coed Y Brenin 

Some 30 miles away are the Black, Red Blue and Green routes of Coed Y Brenin . With its visitor centre, bike hire and shop it makes for another great day Xcountry biking in north Wales.  The routes vary considerably in length and difficulty .  Bikes hired from beics Betws maybe transported or deliverd to Coed Y Brenin by arrangement

Xcountry single track trails


    The nearest single track trails are the Gwydir Mawr and Bach and Penmachno trails. The red Gwydir Mawr and Bach trails are to the north of Betws-y-coed within easy cycling distance of Beics Betws. The Marin trail as The Gwydir Mawr trail was formely known, was one of the first single track forest trails to be developed in the country and gave many people their first taste of single track biking some 25 or 30 years ago. It has been reworked recently with new sections added and offers 25 klm of riding with some great single track sections. Starting from Saw Bench car park near Llanwrst there is some clmibing to be done but the rewards are worth the effort. The trail can also be access from the steep road off Forest Road just out of Betws-y-coed. The Gwydir Bach trail is a shorter version taking in the climb from the main car park and returning on the excellent final descent back to the car park.


    The red Penmachno trail is a volunteer developed and maintained trail just outside the village of Penmachno some 2/3 miles east of Betws-y-coed. Around 30 km in total the trail consists of 2 loops with can be linked into one ride or done separately. With some amazing scenery the ride can feel remote and wild and much of the trail is natural track and surfaces. There is a good variety of single track and forest trails with lots of climbing and good descents.

    We can offer bike deleivery and pick up to Penmachno if required .


    The blue trails at Llyn Brenin and Llyn Alen reservoirs in the Clocaenog Forest are around 15 miles from Beics Betws, again bike delivery can be arranged. Consisting of tracks and single track sections it is ideal for the less confident xcountry biker and their families.Mainly the hills are gentle and the surfaces good. With great open, peaceful countryisde and lake views take your dog or child in one of our trailers or maybe a picnic. There is a lakeside cafe and toilets at Llyn Brenig


    Coed y Brenin is around 30 miles outh if Beics Betws and offers riders a wide choice of tracks and trails, from green to black with a skills park an added attraction. With an excellent trail centre there is a cafe, bike wash, bike hire and shop showers and toilets. Trails include Beast, 35km black; Tarw Du, 20 km black, Yr Afon , easy forest road, 10km; MBR , black 18 km, Dragons Back , red 31km, Temtiwr, red, 8km; Cyflym Coch, Red 12 km; MinorTaur blue, 17 km and Y ffowndri skills area.


    Llandegla trail centre is some 35 miles eatst of Beics Betws on the road between Ruthin and Wrexham, With a great trail centre consting of cafe, bike hire and shop, toilet and wash off facilties it is a great place to hang out as well as ride! With blue, red and black routes there is something for everyone
